During this period in Switzerland's history, each canton issued their own
stamps. The Basel Dove was issued by the Canton of Basel. It is also the
only stamp issued by the Canton of Basel.
It is designed by the architect Melchoir Berry and has the three colors
blue, crimson, and black, the world's first tri-color stamp.
The design was relatively unpopular amongst the local populace and was
soon withdrawn. Today, the Basel Dove remains one of the most beautiful classical stamps.
